Reiki: It’s History & Development

Reiki practice

The Reiki masters work hard to improve a person's health and quality of life by offering positive energy and restoring balance to patients.

Reiki practice is excellent for self-care, care for a family member, and the public in hospitals or other medical settings. Currently, most private medical clinics have seen supporting this therapy for the wellness of the patients. Usui Reiki is the form of Reiki which is being used for over a century now.

About Reiki Founder

Dr Mikao Usui is the founder of the Usui Reiki therapy. He was born into a wealthy family in the year 1865. He was sometimes known as Usui Sensei. Usui's family was capable of offering him a well-rounded education.

Dr Usui got all his education in the Buddhist monastery. He was taught arts like – swordsmanship, martial arts, and a Japanese form of Chi Kung (Kiko). All the while, Dr Usui had a complete interest in medicine, theology, and psychology. This interest urged him to seek a way to heal himself and others using a protective layer of hands. The desire led him to look for a healing method connected to any specific religion and religious belief so that system would be accessible to everyone.

Mikao travelled a lot during his lifetime and studied healing systems of all types. He worked in several different fields but ultimately became a Buddhist priest and lived in a monastery.

Spiritual Awakening of Reiki

During the monastery training time, Dr Usui attended his training rediscovery course in the Mount Kurama Cave. He fasted, meditated, and prayed for 21 days. Later in the morning of the 21st day, he experienced something that changed his life forever.

Dr Usui experienced Sanskrit symbols that helped him develop the healing system he had been struggling to invent till then. Thus, Usui Reiki was born.

Development of Reiki

Later on, Dr Usui established a Reiki healing and teaching clinic in Tokyo in1922. Before his death in 1926, Usui taught several people the mastery of Reiki to ensure that this system wouldn't end with his death. One of the masters who got teachings from his was Dr Chujiro Hayashi, a former naval officer. He established his Reiki clinic in Tokyo.

The credit of adding hand positions in the Reiki practice goes to Dr Hayashi. The hand position helps in thoroughly covering the body of the patient. Not only that, but he also worked to bring about changes to refine the attunement process. Dr Hayashi used his improved system and trained several more Reiki masters, including both men and women.

Mrs Hawayo Takata, a Japanese- American woman, was originally a patient of Dr Hayashi. She went to him for healing. But she became a learner of the system and took Reiki practice back to her home, United States.

The Spread of Modern Reiki

Before the demise of Dr Hayashi, he managed to convey all of the teachings of Dr Mikao to Mrs Hawayo Takata. She continued to practice the art of Reiki for many years until she died. Before she passed away, she accustomed 22 Reiki masters under her.

Currently, the people who practice Reiki use the methods developed by Dr Usui, the Reiki art founder. Modern Reiki masters offer Reiki energy to patients through gentle stagnant light pressure touch using traditional Reiki hand positions. The art of Reiki is used for complementing many medical therapies for healing patients. Masters are trained to help cure people suffering from pain, disease, illness, and other problems.

Finishing Up
